Position Description
The Climate and Wildfire Institute (CWI) seeks a Deputy Director
for Programs and Partnerships (DD) to work closely with the
Executive Director, staff, and Board of Directors. This position
will build a consortium focused on applying science and technology
to wildfire policy and practice. The DD will oversee research and
field programs, manage relationships with affiliates, and measure
program impacts. The role involves integrated wildland fire
management, Tribal relations, climate change knowledge, and
managerial experience. Comfort with working with university
researchers and government officials, along with movement or
coalition building, is desired.
The DD will report to the Executive Director and contribute to
CWI's leadership, including Board relations. The position offers
the opportunity to shape the future of the organization as CWI
works closely with public, private, and academic stakeholders
across the American West to address wildfire risks through just and
inclusive practices. The ideal candidate will help foster
organizational growth and manage programs and staff.
CWI functions as a consortium model, bridging research, practice,
and policy. Existing partnerships include the University of
California, University of Nevada, Reno, California State
University, and the US Forest Service, among others.
Primary Responsibilities
- Identify key strategic areas for CWI by building relationships
with academia, practitioners, and policymakers.
- Create and oversee an annual portfolio of programs.
- Build, manage, and mentor Program and Project staff (currently
two direct reports).
- Collaborate with the Deputy Director of Development and Executive
Director to secure funding.
- Measure and track the impact of CWI programs.
- Manage existing contracts and projects.
- Build strategic relationships with research institutions,
funders, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain relationships with policymakers at various levels.
- Contribute to state and federal planning or policy efforts where
appropriate.

- Lead and mentor team leaders to grow CWI's impact.

Qualifications
**Basic Qualifications** (required at time of application)
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree.
- At least 8 years of professional experience in climate or
wildfire-related fields, research, public policy, or programs.
- Experience leading and building programs.
- Strategic mindset to identify opportunities.
- Passion for CWI's mission.
- Experience managing budgets and fiscal responsibilities.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with
diverse partners.
- Team management experience with an emphasis on equity, diversity,
and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working across disciplines and policy
perspectives.
- Familiarity with open data management and analysis.
- Ability to prioritize and work both independently and
collaboratively.
- Experience with government agencies and coalition building.
- Graduate degree or experience directing academic research.
- Location in California or Northern Nevada preferred.
